Dept. of Psychiatric Medicine - Only Psychosexual clinic in Malabar
The department provides Inpatient & Outpatient services. The services are provided by a Psychiatrist & 2 Counsellor. (One is Psychiatric Social Worker who has M. Phil and Ph. D in Psychiatric Social Work & a Clinical Psychologist who has M. Phil in Mental Health and Social Psychology).
Daily OPD (Mon-Sat) catering to primary psychiatric disorders, psychological/ relational disturbances involving men women & children of all ages.
There are special clinics run by the dept:
Memory clinic: This aims to provide specialised service to people who seek help for memory disturbances. Unlike Dementia clinics that only cater to the elderly, this clinic provides its service to a wider age group, to evaluate this common complaint. Patients are screened with structured rating scales that assess the domains of cognitive difficulty eg. Attention, recall etc. There is also provision to educate bystanders about how to care for clients with dementia. There are brochures on the same.
Disha clinic: This clinic is managed by the counsellors who cater to children especially adolescents dealing with peer/parental relationship issues, adjustment problems, addressing issues that need guidance & clarification.
Memory clinic is conducted on the last Friday of each month
Disha clinic is conducted on the last Wednesday of each month.

De - addiction services
Child Psychiatry services: Attention deficit Hyperactivity disorder, Autism, mental retardation, Learning disabilities in children, behavioural problems of children, unexplained medical problems in children due to psychological reasons, childhood mood disorders, abnormal/unusual habits & childhood anxiety disorders including obsessive compulsive disorders.
Treatment is provided as a team with referrals between the 3 experts. Referrals are made between the team & a mix of counselling & medications is the common manner of treatment. Counselling appointments are fixed before-hand & the contact number of the doctor & counsellor seeing the patient/family is provided.
Counselling team provides assessment of psychological status of patient by standard psychological tests that evaluate personality, unconscious conflicts etc. The counselling techniques include teaching relaxation exercises, biofeedback technique, cognitive behaviour therapy along with marriage counselling, family counselling, parent management training.
The department also provides services to other departments in the hospital including management of psychiatry disorders in the medically/surgically ill, counselling of the bereaved, counselling in chronic ailments that involve psychosocial burden to patient & family eg colostomy patients, amputees, mastectomy patients. Also in cancer & long term kidney diseases, head injury & stroke conditions.
