
MIMSSSI-MIMS Safe School Initiative
The practice of pediatrics in the community will have a positive effect on the general health of their children. This is an important component of comprehensive pediatric health practice and with this objective mims safe school initiative was started. A team of dedicated health professionals from pediatric department of pediatrics in association with schoolteachers and parents of selected neighboring schools are working together to develop a new movement in the Malabar region of Kerala.
Common Medical problems of children in schools
Infectious diseases
Main reason for school absenteeism is infectious diseases, contracted from schools.
Nutrition
Many of our children are undernourished.
any school children have unrecognized hearing and visual defects affecting their studies.
Obesity affects 1 in 5 children.
Physical fight
One in seven students has been in a physical fight on school property.
Many student start smoking.
Many school student report having consumed alcohol.
Child suicidal attempts are on the rise.
Reduced school absenteeism Fewer behavior problems
Improved student performance, higher tests scores, more alert students and more positive attitude among students.
Newer level of cooperative among parents and teachers.
A more positive spirit among education and students.
The inclusion of health awareness into children’s daily lives.
The programme is designed to motivate and assist students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease and reduce health related risk behaviors.
A. Training of teachers.Consultants from different departments will give training to the teachers.Specialists from Child psychology, psychiatry, Dentistry, General pediatrics, ophthalmology, emergency medicine etc is included in the faculty.
B. Standard medical records for all students
C. Medical checks up of all students, at least once in an academic year.
D. Immunization services
E. Priority patient status to school students who contact school health help desk.
F. First aid Box with commitment for regular replenishment of medicines.
G. Provision of School health nurse.
H. Emergency medical care and provision of ambulance service in emergency situations
